Water Damage Tips

Water damage can be caused by a number of sources. Broken pipes, appliance malfunctions, blocked drains, and storms are some of the most common. No matter the origin of your flood, the amount of repairs required will depend greatly on how quickly the excess water can be removed and your property can be dried. While proper water extraction and drying methods are determined by the type of flood and should be handled by professionals, there are several steps you can take to help speed up the drying process.

Before doing anything, contact the professionals at Austex Restoration. We have emergency services to be at your flood in under an hour and extract the excess water pooling within your property. Please note, many water sources contain contaminates. You should treat the floodwater in your home as hazardous until proven otherwise. Take precaution when handling water soaked items. Never turn on any electronics or appliances while standing in water as electrical shock may occur. Stay out of any rooms where the ceiling appears to be retaining water. Ceilings may fall and cause serious injury.

While waiting for us to arrive you can open up windows and doors in water damaged areas, providing optimal ventilation, clean breathing air, and faster drying times. Remove computers, small electronics, books, and decorative items from water-affected areas.  Pick up water saturated rugs and fabrics and make sure to spread them out to dry.  (Bunching wet materials together will increase the chance for mold damage.)  If possible remove pooled water from flat surfaces. Carefully place saucers, wooden blocks, or squares of aluminum foil under the legs of your furniture to help avoid stains in your carpet.

After initial water extraction is complete, open your cabinet doors and dresser drawers to speed up interior drying.  Freeze collectable and valuable books/documents to reduce mildew growth. These items can then be thawed out when proper drying procedures can be followed. During the summer, turning on the air conditioner can help speed up drying. During the winter, alternating between short periods of running the heat and opening windows will provide faster drying. Never run the heat in a building that cannot be ventilated.  This will expand moisture damage and create a faster rate of bacterial growth.  Remember even clean water can produce bacterial growth like mildew. Always hire a professional to extract water, decontaminate, sanitize, and dry out your space after a flood.  Call Austex Restoration now!
